Descanso Gardens used to be an undeveloped part of the enormous
36,000 acre Verdugo Rancho, and was purchased by E.M. Boddy in 1937.
He established the Gardens, including a vast forest of Camellias in the shade
of the oak forest on the land to provide blossoms for the cut-flower industry.
It is now home to North America’s largest Camellia collection on 20 acres
of the garden. There are also five acres of Roses, over 500 Lilacs, and
numerous native plants and seasonal displays. A magnificent Garden.
