Antelope Canyon is located on the Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park a few miles south of Page, Arizona near the Utah border. This page details Upper Antelope Canyon (the Navajo (Dine) name is Tse-Bighanilini, which means “the place where water runs through rocks”). Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon, a narrow cleft in the Navajo Sandstone carved by flash floods which eroded the rock into a winding maze, which in some spots is so narrow that both sides can be touched at once. The erosion has created spectacular flowing patterns and formations in the rock, and in places the sun can pierce the narrow opening at the top of the canyon, producing beams of light (most often in the summer, when the sun is high in the sky).
The Antelope Canyon Portfolio page is presented in Gallery form, with general information on Antelope Canyon itself, as there is very little descriptive material on sections of the canyon.
I have also included a group of ten Fractal Composites made from Antelope Canyon images.

Upper Antelope Canyon is the most photographed slot canyon in the Southwest. Due to the very narrow opening at the top and the depth of the narrow canyon walls, the light can be rather low even in the summer months. Some of these exposures are as long as six seconds, creating an interesting timing challenge as I tried to avoid getting tourists in the shots. The images are presented in order, from just inside the entrance to the canyon to just inside the exit (there are some gaps where a single image has been selected from a larger group of similar images).
The extremely wide range of exposure between the deep shadows in recesses of the inner canyon and the upper walls near the opening (often exceeding 10 EV, the maximum range of the human eye) make this an extremely challenging place to shoot. Processing these images was also quite challenging. These images are the result of recently-developed processing techniques, and I have included many new images, including several of the unique kaleidoscopic Fractal Composites which I have created from some of the images of Antelope Canyon.

Antelope Canyon SXXL
A 1500 x 777 version of the SXXL Composite (8566 x 4437).
These two images were created from the full-size composites, thus the title bar text is very small in comparison to the web previews of the other images shown on this page. The title bars of all full-size images contain text sizes as displayed in these two composites (small in preview, but of a perfectly legible but unobtrusive size in the full-sized image).

Antelope Canyon Fractal Composites
The spectacularly-figured walls and chimneys of Upper Antelope Canyon, besides their exquisite beauty, offer an unusual opportunity to create kaleidoscopic fractal composites. I have created 23 Fractal Composites and have selected ten for display on this page.
The entire set is in the Photoshelter Gallery: Antelope Canyon Fractal Composites
